Laptop Roll out Very Important Information. Imperative that teachers read.
10 things a DET teacher can do in preparation for 1:1 (laptops) in classrooms
May 16, 2009 by darcymoore
This will be the first in a series of posts designed to help our whole school community gain the full benefit of the rollout of laptops.
This year there will be hundreds of laptops flooding into our school and wireless connectivity. We have been preparing for quite a while now and will continue to do so. The pace quickens though and we, each individual, needs to focus on their own particular challenge(s). Here’s 10 things a teacher can do prior to the arrival of the students’ laptops (apologies that some of the videos are hosted at YouTube and consequently filtered by DET):
1. Develop aPLN – Ongoing collaboration is the best way to stay up to date and developing a //Personal Learning Network// is essential. You really need to start now and I have found Twitter to be invaluable. Quite simply, the concept of a virtuous circle is in in operation here when you establish a PLN (and you will lose ground, so to speak, in the classroom, if you do not have a network to support professional learning).*
2.Understand the concept of a PLE– Students will need to develop theirPersonal Learning Environment and become independent of the teacher rather than being aliterate. Read more about 21st century learning environments in detail here. Another ‘way of seeing’ is to read about the toolbelt students will have to assist learning.
3.MOODLE– familiarise yourself with how other staff are using this LMS and build courses through preparing lessons and units of work.
4. Dialogue – talk with staff who are enthusiatic and making good progress with digital learning personally. Ask for advice and assistance. Check out one of their lessons. Ask what Professional Associations are doing to support their members.
5.Dialogue -talk with students, individually and in groups about how having a laptop will change learning and lessons. Seek their ideas. Spread the word of howthey will be more independent and self-directed.
6.Delicious– You should create an account and add others to your network. Support our collective endeavours at the school to build a great collection of websites for staff to use. Seek help if you need to know more or watch this video. Do you know the school Delicious account password? Make sure you tag effectively.
7.10 minutes– Learn how to use RSS feeds and make 10 minutes a day to check your Google Reader account for posts from Edubloggers and pertinent websites you have feeds from. Here’s a video to help. Kelli’s blog has a good post about laptops and is an example of how DET colleagues share their experiences and knowledge. Tim Hand, Elaine Talbert, Tony Searl and Melissa Giddens are DET bloggers too. Organise RSS feeds from these blogs to get started. You’ll soon find blogs specific to your subject area to have feeds from. Check my blogroll to the right for some good blogs.
8.Find free web apps– So many excellent tools and apps are available for free online. Richard Byrne and Larry Ferlazzo are two of the best bloggers for staying informed about these apps. Organise RSS feeds from these blogs.
9. DET portal & TALE – This link (if you are logged on to the portal) will take you to the L4L (Laptops for Learning) page with all the bulletins, links and info available to DET teachers. There is a FAQ. You must read this. The TALE site should be one that all staff are familiar with and increasingly need.
10.Reflect - How can students learn best in my classroom? How can we create life-long learners? Am I a life-long learner? Why am I a teacher? How can I help students to be independent? How can my classroom evolve with new tools and pedagogical ideas? How can I keep up to date happily? What risks do I need to take? What do I most need to be careful about? Who can help me? Who can I help?
All the latest On Phase 1. L1 Our Digital Education Revolution**
Phase 1:
During Term 2, Week 10, on Thursday 2nd July 2009 a few teachers / head teachers were issued the first round of laptops and began the 'commissioning' process in the boardroom. The commissioning with the first group was held during period 3 (kelly, godby, braid, andre) and all went quiet well - only a few gliches and overall, it was a smooth process. Thanks to Denise who has taken the time to fix the problems during the commissioning phase (Social Science Dept).
Information about the Wireless Installation. FROM IBM
IBM will commence Phase 1 - deployment of the "L4L Wireless
Connectivity Project" late May 2009. This project, in accordance with
DET requirements, will be deployed as follows;
Completed in two phases as follows:
Phase 1b
- IBM will install the required Campus infrastructure and equipment to
the "Campus Distributor" and "Building Distributor" rooms. Wireless
access points will be installed in the Library and each of the
nominated Phase 1 Teaching Space rooms to a maximum of 18 in no more
than 3 buildings. Demountables are excluded from this phase.
Phase 2b
- The installation of infrastructure to the remaining "Building
Distributor" rooms' and installation of wireless access points to the
remaining nominated Teaching Space rooms. Teaching Space rooms have
been predefined by the department. The teaching space rooms nominated
by the department are listed in the attached Site Survey. If you find
that you have more, or different teaching space rooms, please advise
us and we will bring it to the attention of the department.
Your school is scheduled to commence implementation on 07/09/2009 and
will be finalised by 11/09/2009. Installation tasks will occur between
8am to 4pm during this period.
IBM will deliver the relevant hardware approximately two (2) business
days before the installation date. The delivery will consist of a
number of boxes that will need to be securely stored at your school.
We will provide specific delivery details, including date, box
quantity and size closer to the installation period.
Please contact IBM immediately on 02 9928 0220 if any of these dates
or times do not suit your school.
To enable IBM to plan the overall deployment a Site Survey has been
scheduled for the
29/06/2009. You are requested to review and complete the attached Site
Survey documentation Part A in preparation for the Site Survey in
particular the rooms that you may wish to nominate for the Phase 1
implementation. This survey has been populated with available
information however we require confirmation, correction or completion
where required. The actual Site Survey is in two parts as follows:
Part A
- Administrative / Nominated Teaching Space Survey / Confirmation -
This part is expected to be completed by the Principal or nominated
representative and includes information in relation to Contacts,
selection of initial Phase 1b Teaching Spaces - Schedules, access and
required re-rooming.
Part B
- Technical / Infrastructure Survey/Confirmation - This part will be
completed by an IBM representative at the agreed time for Site Survey
visit and will be completed with input from the school Technical
Network Support representative and includes information in relation to
required space for new cabinets, existing spare fibre between
buildings and Campus Distributor room and Core Switch spare fibre
capacity.
It is recommended that Part B - Technical / Infrastructure Survey be
completed prior to the completion of Part A as this will identify
those Building Distributor rooms that are suitable for deployment
during Phase 1b and subsequently rooms located near these Building
Distributor rooms which can be nominated for Phase 1b.
You are requested to complete the attached Part A and return to IBM
within 24hrs of the Schedule Site Survey to allow confirmation of your
Implementation Schedule dates.
On receipt of your completed survey documentation, IBM will contact
your nominated representative by phone to clarify any requirements,
and address any project related issues that may have been identified.
Should you require any assistance or clarification please contact the
IBM Project Management Office on 02 9928 0220. If this Department is
unable to assist you with your query, they will record all relevant
details and organise for the appropriate IBM employee to contact you.
